Diamond Certified Experts: Understanding Supply Valves

Diamond Certified Experts: Understanding Supply Valves Host, Sarah Rutan: Supply valves may be a minor part of your plumbing system, but ignoring them can lead to costly consequences. Today we’re in Benicia with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor James Burton of Oak Plumbing to learn more.

James Burton: One of the quick tips for homeowners that we like to focus on is these. These are the valves that supply water from the system that’s inside of your walls to all of the fixtures inside of your home. This one is a supply valve that is used. It’s called an angle stop. We use them to take care of toilets or faucets. Comes out of the wall, goes in through here, comes out to it. A lot of times we’ve got homes that have had these in them for 30 years. They don’t shut off right, they twist, they don’t want to shut off at all, or sometimes they're stuck, or they're dripping just a little bit. A lot of homeowners think, oh, I can put a little bit of silicone on it, I can treat this a little bit to get - but it’s still going to keep dripping. And every single drip are pennies wasted down the drain.

As a matter of fact, these are actually one of the number one reasons why homes have flood damage inside them. One of them bursts, one of them goes out while someone’s on vacation, and this water is trickling out onto a floor, rotting the wood, causing other kinds of problems over time. We recommend quite often that whenever a plumber comes out to take a look at the home that these be taken a look at. They're not the most expensive thing to replace in the home, and they can prevent some very serious damages that could affect the health of your home and your quality of life.
