The second installment of our Gulf Coast Swing Series. During our IFR flight from Chicago Aurora (ARR) to Auburn, Alabama (AUO) we experience a dual vacuum pump failure. This is incredibly rare as each engine has a separate independent vacuum pump. In my plane the vacuum pumps operate the surface de-ice boots and the backup attitude indicator. Luckily I've upgraded my plane with new digital attitude indicators (AHRS) but there are still many planes flying around with the vacuum attitude indicator as the primary attitude reference for flight in the clouds and their autopilots, in many cases, operate off this instrument. In that case, this would have been a serious emergency situation!
