It's the question of the year, it seems. Conservatives and progressives alike are discussing the issue anew. Should we love free trade or hate free trade? The obvious answer? We should love free trade, of course!
If we want to solve the world's biggest problems, we need great ideas coming in from as many places as possible.
Of course, it's not always that simple. When ill-intentioned governments get in the way, they can create massive disparities, unfair rules, and a one-sided playing field.
Nations—and their people—thrive when the playing field is level and trade is open.

It's a big question in our world today whether I ought to love free trade or whether I ought to hate free trade.
The answer, from my perspective, is you ought to love free trade for the same reason that you love free speech.
We really value the First Amendment because we know that sharing ideas freely is so important for us to get to the truth about the issues that affect us.
It's the same with free trade. Free trade gives us the opportunity to find all sorts of ways, all around the world, to share the good things that we can produce and benefit from those who are creating those things.
If we want to solve the world's biggest problems, we need great ideas coming from as many places as possible, and that means we want to take down the barriers that prevent people from trading with one another.
The big issue in our world isn't free trade, it's when governments get in the middle of trade by creating an unlevel playing field.
If we could level the playing field, trade could produce amazing results.
