🏛 Ancient Greek frieze depicting a religious scene. The goddess Tyche (Τύχη) is shown seated in the centre and bulls are presented by priests for sacrifice. Tyche, Greek for “chance” or “luck,” was the goddess who presided over the fortune and prosperity of city states. Tyche was unpredictable, arbitrary, capricious in her distribution of good or bad luck. All people could hope for was that Tyche might be kind to them as individuals in specific instances. Sacrifices at her temples were thought to please her, while yet not guaranteeing a favorable response from her.
🌍 The artwork was created during the Roman period in a Greek city of Pamphylia, Asia Minor (present-day Turkey).
