The West Bengal government has decided to allot new plots for construction of cricket ground, football academy and indoor stadiums, to promulgate sporting events in the state. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that they were ready to give land to Cricket Association of Bengal(CAB) to develop a cricket stadium in Rajarhat, at the Khel Ratna Ceremony, citing that the foundation of a new stadium would enable the conduction of newer events. She also mentioned that ISL franchise Atletico De Kolkata[ATK] yearned for the establishment of a football academy in the city for which they were being allotted land in Dumdum area.
She also rendered her desire to nurture fresh talent in soccer by taking five clubs from Kolkata and five from other districts and teaching them regarding the nitigrities of the game. She wanted to the franchise to spend something for the development of Bengal. The government also has conjured plans to set up a new indoor stadium at a 20 acre plot in Rajarhat with a capacity of 20000. On the Sports Village in Jalpaiguri district, she commented about it being of international standards but sought the support of the corporate sector to make it function under a PPP (public private partnership) model.
Altogether, there are 26 disparate indoor stadiums which are coming up in the state.With West Bengal being one of the venues for the FIFA U-17 world cup, the chief minister announced that Chief Minister had already granted 2 lakhs worth of funding to about 6000 clubs which would receive a further corroboration of 1 lakhs. During the award ceremony, veteran footballer P K Banerjee and veteran tennis player Akhtar Ali was honoured with lifetime achievement award by the state government.
