Ada was inspired to write the Christian hymn after hearing her disabled nephew repeat a phrase, "the sunny side", as he always wanted his wheel cheer to be rolled up and down the sunny side of the street. Later another gentleman put music to the song, but we felt like we should write our own music to the public domain lyrics.
In 1928 the song was made popular by the Carter Family band. The song continued to be known and was covered by various other artists for years. In 1964 the Carter family had an album called "Keep on the Sunny Side" with special guest Johnny Cash on the album. As we all know, Johnny Cash and June Carter got married and became quite the musical duo which was inspiring to us as a husband/wife musical duo.
Almost exactly 100 years after Ada Blenkhorn wrote the hymn, the song found fame once again as the Whites cut the tune for the popular "O' Brother Where Art Though" sound track in 2000.
As we continue to look back in history, it seems that the hymns and old Christmas songs are the ones that have the most staying power throughout the years.
