In this video, Danny, from Horizon Roofing, Inc., will show you how to install sheet metal cap flashing on the outer edge of a roof. Be sure to check out our video: “How to Install a Sheet Metal Cover Plate” after you’ve mastered this skill.
Installing sheet metal cap flashing can be done only if your locking strip or keeper strip has been installed. If you aren’t familiar with how to do that, refer to our video: “How to Install Keeper Level 1”. Once you have a keeper strip installed you can peel the plastic off of your coping aka cap flashing and begin snapping it on as you go. It is important that you are always focused on hooking the keeper.
To install the coping you will take both hands and dip the fixture over the edge of the roof, making sure the kick on the coping is grabbing and hooking the preinstalled locking strip or keeper strip. Once hooked, snap it back and pull over the parapet wall. Double-check your locking strip hooked the coping all the way and proceed on the remaining roof edge.
Tips to Remember: Overtime, buildings will expand and contract. Due to this, you want to keep approximately a 1” gap between all pieces of coping. Don’t worry, you will cover this gap with a cover plate.
