Spot Welding of Composite Parts to Steel Components by the use of Weldable Inserts

Spot Welding of Composite Parts to Steel Components by the use of Weldable Inserts Multi-material-design plays a key role in modern car body construction when it comes to economical weight reduction in the automotive sector. To satisfy individual component requirements, composite parts are combined with steel structures.

However, conventional resistance spot welding cannot be used for composite/metal joints until today. Accordingly, more expensive joining techniques such as clinching & riveting have to be implemented in the body-in-white construction.

A new promising technology are spot weldable inserts. These weldable load introducing elements can easily be integrated during the manufacturing of composite parts. High volume processes such as Resign transfer molding or thermoforming of organo sheets are compatible. This allows the economical use of resistance spot welding for composite/metal joints in future car body constructions.
