Caroline Criado Perez: Algorithms make sexist data even more sexist

Caroline Criado Perez: Algorithms make sexist data even more sexist Author Caroline Criado Perez recently published her book ”Invisible Women” where she writes about the world being built by and for men. In this interview by Swedish journalist Katrine Marçal she reveals that many things, like the office temperature and car safety features, are based on data collected from men. The differences can put women in an uncomfortable or even dangerous situation.

The biased data is used to train the algorithms running the artificial intelligence that is getting more and more incorporated in society. As machine learning gets better the sexist data become even more sexist, and the coders behind the algorithms aren’t aware of the problem.

According to Criado Perez, the gender data gap does not primarily come from sexism, but rather a lack of diversity in decision makers. Female problems aren’t recognized to the same extent by the men that aren’t affected by them.
